What’s your story?
I am a painter from Chula Vista, CA with big dreams. I grew up in a single-parent home. I moved to Idaho in high school, and eventually travelled around the world. I’m in Paia, Hawaii now.
My father committed suicide caused by Bipolar Disorder when I was a baby. I now suffer from the same illness. My mom worked full time as a nurse, so I was a latchkey kid. I was labeled as a problem child and didn’t do well in high school. I always wanted to be somewhere else.
I graduated from Boise State University in 2014, and travelled around the world for a few years working with philanthropic organizations or scuba diving. I’ve tried out various professions, but Painter seems to be the one that stuck. I garden, hike in the mountains, backpack, swim, and explore. Science enthralls me. I am in love with the Cosmos, and hold the mysteries of the universe in the highest regard.
How do you find inspiration?
My work has evolved over time because I am evolving over time. Culture, science, the nature of existence, color, and place all play some role in the work. Mania probably has something to do with it. Sometimes I’m not inspired to paint at all, but I’d feel awful if I didn’t. Sometimes I feel like I’m just a vessel for the work to get through.
What is your favorite room in the house?
Probably my lanai (porch) – it’s the spot to chill out after a long day of work. We can catch some of the sunsets from there, and I can work on my garden when the conversation gets boring. Chill out, drink beers… good vibes out there.
What is your favorite food?
Carne Asada Fries from Lolita’s Taco shop in Chula Vista and tangerine popsicles.
What is your next purchase?
A high-quality record player set up with nice speakers all through my house and a bunch of records.
Do you have any favorite artists?
Eugene R. Coles, Joan Mitchell, Jenny Saville, Jane Frank, Amy Sillman, Georgia O’Keefe, Frida Kahlo Maybe humanity is my favorite artist. Humanity or the universe- do those count?
Twitter or Instagram?
Twitter. I have less followers, and speak more freely there.
What would you tell your next buyers?
I’d tell them to take good care of my work. I see these works as pieces of my soul that I poured into something, and I can never get that soul back once I sell it to you. Just be kind to the work, keep it safe.
What’s on your playlist?
Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, The Beatles, Zepplin, Gary Clark Jr., Bill Withers, Ella Fitzgerald, the Lo-Fi Beats playlist on Spotify, Manatee Commune.
Where can we find you next?
I moved into a studio in the Pauwela Cannery, Haiku, HI. I just got back from traveling around Europe, so I intend on enjoying Maui for a few months. I’m hoping to get to New York before the end of 2019.
